We had a great seminar in Fortaleza, Brazil that has been going on for 8 years. Everyone celebrated Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and the 8th year of the seminar. Master Ricardo was present and has been very involved with the seminars. While in Brazil, Master Ricardo taught many different techniques and had an amazing time teaching all the students. Many of the best Jiu-Jitsu professors were present and it was a great experience for all of the students.

Congratulations to Matt Cox for earning his first black belt. On August 28th, at Redemption Fight Team Las Vegas, we celebrated this important moment in history.

Matt Cox, under the training of Rob Lagasca, received his first black belt. Rob Lagasca received his first black belt from Master Ricardo Cavalcanti who was present at the belt ceremony in honor of Matt Cox.

Over 100 people attended the ceremony to celebrate the hard work it has taken to make this journey. It takes great dedication and thousands of hours of training to achieve this honor. It is a great honor to have Matt Cox in the family and look forward to many new achievements to come.

Redemption Fight Team

We are looking for support to help direct kids away from drugs, gangs, and crime through teaching Jiu-Jitsu. The program is run by PROJECT ACTION AND REACTION BJJ FORTALEZA, one of our brothers, Prof. Moises Costa.

He does this all for free and never asks for any payment. However, the expenses are great and we appreciate any financial support to keep this project going. We have a very clear mission to help kids and keep them doing something productive and will help them in their future.

Jiu-Jitsu history was written thousands of years ago into the lives of Buddhist monks of India, and today Jiu-Jitsu comes from the Land of the Rising Sun which was traced back to the Samurai and arguably perfected in Rio de Janeiro Brazil by the Gracie family and their selected few.

Jiu-Jitsu History takes us back to the Samurai Edo Era between 1603-1867. These Bushido Warriors were extremely armored while on foot or horseback. The art of Jiu-Jitsu or ( The Gentle Art ) was developed for the Samurai to fight. The Samurai were smaller and physically weaker than there enemies, so they needed a system that they could defend themselves when disarmed or on foot.

At this moment the Samurai became more powerful than any opponent they encountered, thus making Jiu-Jitsu superior to any other fighting form. In the teachings of Jiu-Jitsu History, we must also add that by the mid-1800s Jiu-jitsu had stemmed out into different techniques and styles which one of them is known today as Judo, but they all generally incorporated most aspects of hand to hand combat including strikes, grappling and weapon-based attacks and disarms.

Jiu-Jitsu History is an ongoing story, as we the teachers, students, and everyone who is involved in this extravagant lifestyle will continue to define what it is and where it’s going. In the words of the Gracie Grand Masters, “You could never live long enough to learn everything about Jiu-Jitsu, as it evolves on a daily basis.”

Many people feel like they need to work out and lose weight before joining a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class, but what they don’t understand that it’s better to just jump in. Here is why:

• You use different muscles in Jiu Jitsu than most common cardio training routines. Therefor its better to start training and train all your muscles.
• Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is an intense sport and is even better than swimming!
• You will shed weight quickly and have fun at the same time.
• Most of my overweight students lose 20-30 pounds in the first month with daily training.
• You will gain speed, conditioning, and strength.
• By doing something fun and challenging you don’t even think about the weight. Your attention is focused on learning and growing in technique. The weight will come off by itself.

That’s why I recommend to just jump right in. The hardest part of starting to lose weight is the fear of no motivation. Wait till you start class and see how much you enjoy Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. You are going to want to come ready no matter how tired you are because the sport is fun and will keep you motivated.
